In recent years, the unhealthy work culture of Malaysia, dubbed the “always tired” culture has been given more and more attention. The perception of an "always tired" or burnout culture in Malaysia is a significant, documented issue stemming from high-stress work environments, long hours, and economic pressure. A 2022 study found that 53% of Malaysian employees report at least one dimension of work-related stress, while more recent figures (2024–2025) suggest that up to 67% of workers in certain sectors suffer from burnout. These stresses stem from Long working hours, excessive micromanaging, and a severe lack of work life balance.
For most of these factors, a drastic change of culture would be necessary, but for the long working hours aspect, supplementation may offer some relieve. However, supplementation of nutrients have been on the rise, which most Malaysians would use them to combat tiredness, and assist in their performances across the day. Despite this, there is still a rise in work burnout or fatigue, it is apparent that these supplementation routines are simply not enough.
The Hidden Gaps in recovery
Sleep Deprivation
Sleep is a vital part in our lives as it allows the body to enter rest mode and initiate many recovery systems within the body, having adequate sleep allows us to recover better and be able to be at our top performance the next day. Findings from Malaysia’s Healthiest Workplace by AIA Vitality 2019 survey showed that 51% of Malaysian workers are getting less than 7 hours of sleep. Getting the required amount of sleep rather than going by supplementation alone is the best recovery booster one could have.
Sleep quality and stress levels have a strong level of correlation. By focusing on destressing, a person can and will be able to gain better sleep quality, and thus have a better recovery than compared to others. By focusing purely on performance alone, through consuming preworkout and high amounts of caffeine, it can put a significant amount of hidden stress on to one’s body, which may be detrimental to the person in the future.
Stress hormones
Although a small amount of stress is good for the body as cortisol regulates many aspects of life, like sleep wake cycle, blood pressure and immune response. In the aforementioned survey, 51% of correspondents possess atleast a single dimension of work related stress. This frequent and high stress can result in the detriment of weakened immune system, poor sleep quality and hypertension, which is difficult to recover from.
Supplements that support recovery
There are certain kinds of supplements which can support one’s recovery. For example, Zinc supplements, although do not directly boost physical recovery, helps in the recovery of one’s own immune system, helping in the turnover of immune cells and in addition, body cells. Magnesium supplements however, possesses neuroprotective properties and may help in the recovery of nerve cells, innervated tissue (e.g. Muscle Tissue), and Magnesium also functions as an electrolyte, aiding in the function of muscles.
ZMA supplements or Zinc Magnesium Aspartate supplements, is a mixture of both zinc and magnesium supplements, but the magnesium is in the form of magnesium aspartate, a more bioavailable form of magnesium, plus the supplement usually has vitamin B6 in it. Vitamin B6 is commonly cited as having sleep improving qualities to it, allowing you to have a better rest every night.
Adaptogens, are molecules which help the body to adapt to environmental stressors. These molecules can help the body to adapt to the chronic stressors that occur in our everyday lives, like work stress, oxidative stresses from UV, air pollutants, fatty foods, etc. Adaptogens in the market currently are Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Ginseng, Reishi Mushrooms (Lingzhi), Rhodiola rosea, Schisandra, and Tulsi (holy basil).
Why recovery = Real Performance
Muscle recovery
Along our exercise, muscle cells can degrade and break, therefore along an exercise, if we use supplementation purely for performance alone, and not focus on the recovery aspect, we may be holding ourselves back, or even worse, hurt ourselves.
Like a battery, if our muscles do not recover, they cannot work at their full potential, which leads to a reduction in true performance, and also may cause more harm than good.
Hormonal balance
Studies have shown that when we are running on an energy deficit, it can lead to hormonal imbalances. By pushing and supplementing for performance, we often can forget to rest and recharge, which leads to a reduction in energy, and overtime, leading to an energy deficit. This will result in a hormonal imbalance, which has been linked to poor physical recovery, which will become detrimental to our day to day life should it persists.
By focusing on recovery, allowing our body to regain the energy it needs. That is where the real performances lie.
Who needs this the most?
People who need to supplement for performance and recovery as well the most are people who undergo daily activities which eats into night time, affecting sleep. Students, Night shift workers, and night life professionals, people who often work through the night.
Performance begins when we can rest after training, not during. As performance can grow when we rest well and can return stronger
