Are Supplements Helping Malaysians Stay Active Longer — Not Just Look Fit?

Are Supplements Helping Malaysians Stay Active Longer — Not Just Look Fit?

In 2026, the idea of just looking fit has greatly shifted towards longevity-oriented goals. With Malaysia’s population aging faster than many developed nations—those aged 60 and above are projected to make up over 15% of the population by the year 2030. People have begun to understand that maintaining physical fitness alone is insufficient if they are unable to climb stairs at the age of 50. This trend sparked a narrative shift in supplements toward the goal of longevity.

Traditionally, fitness in Malaysia is synonymous with weight loss or bodybuilding. In recent years, the rise of the "HealthTok” space in Malaysia has shifted the narrative from a looks-first fitness mindset to a health-first fitness mindset. The general populace has also started to understand the difference between lifespan (how long you are able to live) and healthspan (how long you can live healthily).

Joint Stress from Modern Training

Modern training regimens focus on High Intensity and Intervals (HIIT) and/or Endurance (Cardio), which may sometimes put a lot of pressure on our joints and cause hastened wear and tear on them.

To reduce the impact of these high-intensity exercises, supplementation is vital to assisting in the recovery of joints and ensuring proper longevity.

Supplements for Mobility Support

Supplements for mobility support target essential nutrients for cartilage growth and health. These supplements include chondroitin, glucosamine, and collagen.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin

These supplements are typically taken together and are usually formulated as a single supplement. They are the main constituents in joint cartilage (the smooth bone that lines the joints, allowing for a frictionless motion). Although they are typically taken together, their functions differ.

Chondroitin

Studies have indicated that chondroitin can prevent cartilage breakdown and stimulate the cartilage's repair system.

Glucosamine

Studies have indicated that glucosamine also has some effects on maintaining joint health by preventing cartilage breakdown. However, glucosamine also has been shown to raise blood sugar levels, as it's an amino sugar (amino acid + sugar). Therefore, diabetic patients should also be careful when consuming glucosamine. It may also exacerbate asthma symptoms as well; therefore, individuals with a history of asthma should exercise caution when taking these supplements.

⚠️

*HOWEVER, SHOULD YOU BE TAKING ANY ANTICOAGULANTS, FOR EXAMPLE, WARFARIN, BE SURE TO CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE CONSUMING GLUCOSAMINE OR CHONDROITIN, OR BOTH AT THE SAME TIME, AS THEY CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF BLEEDING. CHONDROITIN MAY ALSO EXACERBATE ASTHMA SYMPTOMS AS WELL.

Collagen

Collagen is the most popular nutritive supplement known in the world. But did you know that there are different kinds of collagen in supplements?

Figure 1: Types of Collagen supplements currently in the market

Hydrolyzed Collagen

Hydrolyzed collagen is just regular collagen molecules broken down to smaller peptides. This results in better absorption than regular collagen molecules. Thus far, collagen supplements on the market currently are associated with no adverse side effects if consumed moderately. Excessive consumption, like excessive consumption of any food items, can lead to side effects. The adverse side effects of excessive consumption of collagen are bloating, heartburn, constipation, and/or diarrhea.

 Regular Collagen

This type of collagen supplement is further differentiated into 3 distinct types: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3.

Type 1 Collagen and Type 3 Collagen

These collagen types are typically found in hair, skin, and bones and are, however, less involved in the joint structure. They are more for skin care, beauty treatments, and tendon strength.

Type 2 Collagen

This collagen is more involved in joint structure and support. Therefore, it would provide the best efficacy when consumed for joint health.

How to differentiate between the 2 categories of collagen in supplemental products

Type 1 and Type 3 collagen are usually derived from marine/bovine sources, and therefore, spotting these words, “marine collagen" and "bovine collagen,” would help you identify their source.

For Type 2 Collagen, it is usually stated as either “Type 2 Collagen”, “Type-II Collagen” or “C-II”.

Collagen Tripeptide

This type of collagen is the most readily absorbed form of collagen. As noted from figure 1, it is the smallest form of collagen there is. With its small form comes drastically increased absorption. However, this increased absorption does come at a higher price point.

At ProteinLab Malaysia, we offer a variety of collagen supplements:

Core Champs Collagen (hydrolyzed Collagen)

Scitec Nutrition Collagen (Hydrolyzed Collagen)

Fit n Lean Collagen and Probiotics (Type 1 and 3 Collagen Peptides)

Preventing Wear and Tear from Lifestyle

It isn't just athletes who need support. The "sedentary-active" lifestyle, which is increasingly common in urban Malaysia, has created specific issues. Long hours of "tech neck" and sitting lead to stiffening of the connective tissues.

Supplements act as a preventative insurance policy. By providing the body with the raw materials it needs to maintain tissue integrity, Malaysians are finding they can better transition from a day at the office to an evening yoga or Pilates session with significantly less stiffness and "startup" pain.

Active Aging in Malaysia

The goal of "Active Aging" is to maintain independence. In

Malaysia, where the government is currently reviewing raising the retirement age to 65, staying physically capable is now a financial and social necessity.

Longevity training focuses on functional capacity. Supplements that support bone density and joint health are the silent partners in this journey, ensuring that when a Malaysian reaches their 60s, they are still participating in the community, not just observing it.

Staying active and healthy requires a long-term approach. Investing in high-quality joint and mobility supplements isn't an optional thing; it’s fitness sustainability and long-term health. Don’t wait for the first "crackling" in your knee or the first ache in your lower back. By integrating mobility support into your daily routine now, you aren't just building a body that looks good today; you’re building a body that works for a lifetime.
